I love first day of school photos. Those “first day” photos are filled with excitement, hope, and questions. As we look at those photos on social media, we pray for the students and all the new school year will bring.
There are no first day photos in my house this year. But I do have the first day of Confirmation photo from last night. It too holds the hopes, dreams, and prayers of not only the students, but also their parents and the whole faith family.
How appropriate that one of the Bible readings for Sunday is “Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days.” Deut 30:19-20
Choose life is what the parents and the students are hoping the Confirmation journey will bring. Hold fast to the Lord your God is what the teachers and mentors want to share. They are all committing to growing deeper in relationship to God and each other.
First photos. A new program year. And brand new building space. All of these give us an opportunity to reflect: What does it look like to choose life in these new beginnings?
I am so excited for what God is up to in the lives of God’s people—these youth, their parents, the congregation, and beyond. How will we follow Jesus? What risks might that entail? What commitments and choices will we make? How will we listen for God’s voice among the busyness of our lives? Each of our answers will look different, because God created us with diversity. Together we are the people of God and we walk this journey of life together.
My prayer for you all today is…choose life so that you may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying him and holding fast to him, for that means life today and always.
